Submarine Ballast

Guide a submarine through underwater depth gates using ballast rather than instant vertical controls. Flooding the tanks increases weight and produces a slow descent; blowing them restores buoyancy and causes the boat to rise. Bow and stern trim change pitch, while horizontal currents differ by depth and can push the submarine off the gate line.

How to Play Submarine Ballast

Hold S or Arrow Down to flood both ballast tanks and increase descent. Hold W or Arrow Up to blow both tanks and increase buoyancy. Use Q to add bow ballast and E to add stern ballast, changing the submarine's trim and pitch. Use A and D or Left and Right Arrow for the weak horizontal propeller. Ballast changes take time to affect vertical speed, so reverse buoyancy before reaching the target depth. Watch the depth-current chart because each water layer pushes the submarine in a different horizontal direction. Pass every depth gate within its allowed depth and pitch tolerance while avoiding rocks and the seabed. Press P to pause, M for sound, F for fullscreen and R to restart the current mission.

Submarine Ballast is a single-player browser physics game focused on buoyancy and underwater navigation. Flooding the ballast tanks makes the submarine gradually descend, while blowing them restores positive buoyancy and causes it to rise. Bow and stern ballast can also be adjusted separately to control pitch. Different depth layers contain opposing currents, so choosing when to descend or rise also changes how the submarine drifts horizontally.
